HMRC does not know how many billionaires pay taxes in the UK or how much contribute, a group of parliament members have warned, although there is a lot of tax revenue that they are contributing, piling up more supervision about the feasibility of a blanket wealth tax.
In a report that examined how to tax the rich, the Public Account Committee (PAC) condemned the HMRC because of its loose understanding of the wealth of billionaires in the UK, saying it “could and had to do more to understand the contributions of the cohorts given to public finances.
As part of this paper, MPs in PAC suggested HMRC utilizing the data available to the public about very high individuals, such as the Sunday Times rich list, and use AI tools to get the richest population in the UK.
PAC member Lloyd Hatton said: “We already know a lot about billionaires who live in the UK, with a lot of information about their tax affairs and wealth in the public domain.
“So we are disappointed to find that HMRC, from all organizations, cannot provide insight into their tax affairs from their own data – especially considering that each of these individual contributions can make a significant difference to the whole picture.”
The cross-party member group also knocked on the British Customs Authority due to the fact that they did not issue any punishment for the excavation of tax avoidance even though he recognized the role of “immoral advisors” during evidence.
This recommends HMRC officials for whether the corpse uses sanctions available for it efficiently, after the paper found the prosecution given by HMRC to the rich has plummeted from 1,747 to 456.
Hatton added: “Of course there is room for improvement. We hope that HMRC uses our recommendations and new funds that have been secured in this field to do so.”
Wealth tax under supervision
This report supports new supervision about the practical feasibility of national wealth tax after getting momentum in some political circles as a way for the Chancellor to connect the fiscal gap worth billions of pounds with the upcoming budget.
The government on several occasions refused to put aside introducing a blanket tax on wealth above £ 10 million, although experts and economists warn the launch of the practical will be very difficult and impossible to generate a lot of income.
Andy Summers, Associate Professor at the London School of Economics, told Bloomberg that the wealth tax “cannot be done” unless the Ministry of Finance has been working on it for years, because the government does not have the means to monitor the wealth of the population as a whole.
A spokesman for HMRC said: “The government is determined to ensure that everyone pays the tax they owe.
“Additional resources are announced in a new spending review that allows us to significantly increase our work to cover the tax gap between the richest.”
