The economy faced the “middle -aged crisis” after a new study revealed the number of prosecutors of unemployment benefits aged 50 or more had reached nearly two million for the first time.
A new report from the Center for Social Justice (CSJ) has shown the number of 50 to 64 years who did not work and claimed the benefits had jumped 600,000 to 1.99 million since February 2020.
This study shows an increase of 21 percent since 2015 in older people who come out of the workforce due to health conditions.
But the report describes that the doctor does not have time and resources to provide an assessment of adjustments that can be made so that individuals can continue to work.
Emerged as 93 percent of the 2.7 million recipient fit records in the last quarter of 2024/25 given labeled “Not suitable for work”. Only seven percent submitted “may be suitable for work”.
CSJ said the numbers reflect the “default system for the absence of full disease”.
The benefits of reform can submit billions to the Ministry of Finance
Member of the Labor Parliament Carolyn Harris, Deputy Chairperson of CSJ, said: “As shown by this time report, the British economy faces a ‘middle -aged crisis’.”
Harris called for the government to drive the “national work and health service” in an effort to help “stem the flow” of nearly 300,000 that came out of the labor market due to illness.
The report said that new services will help reduce unnecessary drop-out workers for older workers and “keep them involved with work, even at a reduced level”.
It also recommends career guidance for age specialists through new national work and career services.
Mercy Muroki, Director of Development at CSJ, said: “By adopting the steps specified in this report, the government can improve the product of the labor market for parents, reduce welfare dependence, and build a more inclusive and tough labor market.”
He added: “Even a simple increase in work among people who are economically inactive above 50 can generate billions of tax income and welfare savings.”
Calls came after the Ministry of Finance faced a frightening warning from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research that Rachel Reeves needs to raise more than £ 50 billion new taxes to remain in the fiscal rules of “iron wrapped”.
The Chancellor hopes that a series of welfare reforms will reduce £ 5 billion in expenditure but a strong reaction from party rebels causes government lines to return.
