Star West Ham United Lucas Paqueta has been released from the determination of spots after the independent panel found accusations because it was deliberately subject to a yellow card not to be proven, the soccer association had confirmed.
It happened two years after the FA announced an investigation into the International Brazilian midfielder, a development that was blamed for thwarting Paqueta’s transfer which might have been decided £ 85 million to Manchester City in August 2023.
Paqueta, 27, faced the possibility of a ban on life from football if proven guilty. He, however, was found guilty of lower accusations for failing to cooperate fully with the investigation. Sanctions must still be determined for the violation.
“An independent regulation commission has found allegations of violations of Lucas Paqueta West Ham United for alleged violations of FA E5 regulations not proven,” FA said.
“Lucas Paqueta was charged with four alleged violations of FA E5.1 regulations in connection with his behavior during the club’s Premier League match against Leicester City on November 12, 2022; Aston Villa on March 12, 2023; Leeds United on May 21, 2023; and AFC Bournemouth on August 12, 2023.
“It is suspected that Lucas Paqueta directly tried to influence the progress, behavior, or other aspects of, or events in this match deliberately try to receive cards from the referee for improper purposes to influence the betting market so that one or more people get profit from betting.
“Lucas Paqueta denied the accusations against him, and the regulatory commission found that they were not proven after the trial.”
What Lucas Paqueta and West Ham said
Paqueta said: “Since the first day of this investigation, I have defended my innocence of this very serious accusation.
“I can’t say anything else now, but I want to express how grateful I am to God and how excited I am to return to playing soccer with a smile on my face. To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to fans who always entertain me, and to my family, friends and legal teams that have supported me -thank you for everything.
Deputy Chairman of West Ham Karren Brady said: “We are happy that Lucas has been cleaned. He has defended his innocence from the start, and as our club firmly stood beside him and supported him throughout the process.
“Apart from the extraordinary pressure on him, Lucas has done week after week for the club, always giving everything. This is a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he remains truly professional throughout and he now hopes to draw a line under this episode, like everyone at West Ham United.”
What Paqueta’s Legal Team said
Lawyer Paqueta Alastair Campbell, a partner at the level, said they had proven that his client “integrity as a player and someone was no doubt”.
He added: “Some cases carry gravity on this one – professionally, personal and emotional for our clients. Lucas has faced great pressure with extraordinary strength and endurance. Now, he was finally able to focus on focusing on the most important things for him – playing soccer and with his family.”
Lawyer Nick De Marco KC, who acted for Paqueta, called him “maybe one of the most important cases I have ever worked on” in a post on social media.
He added: “After getting to know Lucas during the process, and spend a lot of time with evidence, I am happy that the correct verdict has been achieved.
“Conducting cases for an individual, especially dedicated and talented like Lucas, the whole career and life depends on the results, sometimes very stressful. But when the end result is the right one, it makes everything useful.”
