OpenAI insists the insinuation misrepresents its plans

The public spat between OpenAI and Anthropic over advertising within chatbots is lively, but the substance lies elsewhere. This is an early test example of how the AI ​​platform intends to fund itself without breaking user trust.

Anthropic’s decision to air a Super Bowl campaign mocking the idea of ​​advertising within an AI assistant was made with clear and strategic intent.

The campaign, created with the tagline “Ads are coming to AI. But not Claude” was launched days after OpenAI confirmed it would begin testing ads on the free and low-cost ChatGPT tiers in the US.

OpenAI insists the insinuation misrepresents its plans. Advertisements, it claims, will be clearly labeled and will not influence responses, and paid tiers will remain ad-free.

But a very lengthy response from CEO Sam Altman shows that this issue is very tense.

Despite the back-and-forth earlier this week, both companies are responding to the same underlying pressures. Generative AI is very expensive to run, and both giants need to find ways to monetize their platforms.

ChatGPT now serves hundreds of millions of users worldwide, most of whom pay nothing.

OpenAI has disclosed billions of dollars in operating losses caused by data center costs and computing expenses, and predicts it will not be profitable until the end of the decade.

But advertising, however carefully introduced, offered Altman a measurable way to subsidize free access.

Different models, same obstacles

The Superbowl story suggests that Anthropic has chosen a different path, at least for now.

Its revenue was channeled more into corporate contracts and paid subscriptions for its more capable Claude models, giving it room to position itself as ‘ad-free’, and use that stance as a differentiator while the market was still forming.

In this case, buying one of the most expensive advertising slots in the world to oppose advertising is not a contradiction.

Anthropic essentially informs users, regulators, and enterprise customers about their position in the AI ​​value chain, away from consumer media.

This tension also reflects how the AI ​​interface differs from previous platforms.

Ads embedded in search results are familiar to users globally. But ads within chat tools, where users ask for advice about work, health, or decision-making, immediately raise questions about neutrality and responsibility.

And, even if the answers are not directly influenced, the commercial context changes the way the output is viewed.

These concerns are not limited to consumers, as companies implementing generative AI into their workflows now have to think about governance and bias in a less pressing way when the tools are largely funded by subscriptions.

From OpenAI’s point of view, the risks are reduced in both directions. If you move too quickly, user trust will quickly erode.

But this was too slow and infrastructure costs ballooned while competitors looked for revenue elsewhere.

The company’s careful framing, calling the launch a ‘test’, tightly controlling partner messaging, and limiting early metrics, proves that the company is well aware of these risks.
