EFL said “in a follow -up discussion” with owner Sheffield Wednesday Dejphon Chansiri for the sale of financial football clubs.
Wednesday will start the new season this weekend even though the players are not paid and part of the Hillsborough Stadium they are closed due to lack of chronic funds.
The English Football League (EFL) said Thailand’s tycoon Taipan Chansiri must now show that the club has a new capital or sells, which he said has guaranteed that he is willing to do it.
“The league wants to see a strong, stable and competitive Wednesday Sheffield, and for that it happens, we clearly that the current owner needs to fund the club to fulfill his obligations or improve his commitment to sell to a well funded party, for a fair market value-ending at this time and visuality,” Efl said.
“We continue to pursue the options available for us to complete the current challenges, and for that the league is currently in further discussion with the legal advisor of Mr. Chansiri about formalizing the process of divesting its share ownership at the club.
“The EFL council met on Wednesday morning to receive a comprehensive update and followed the new speculation, the league could confirm that there was no restrictions on the club that started the season on Sunday as planned.”
Sheff Wed and Chansiri Future as doubts
Former champions Wednesday is one of the oldest clubs in England, who came from more than 150 years, but their future has been doubted by their financial problems.
EFL expects players to be paid before their first league match because the club was determined to receive payment of solidarity from the Premier League this week.
But beyond that it is not clear how they can survive unless there is a new investment, while Chansiri faces a process that has not been able to make him disqualified as an owner.
“The independent disciplinary commission process against the club and Mr. Chansiri, announced in June, continues,” EFL added.
“Unfortunately, the league cannot offer further comments about the current process time.
“The club has now exceeded 30 days of late payment for the year starting July 1, 2025. As a result, the club’s cost restrictions have been extended until the end of the winter transfer window in the 2026/27 season.
“EFL can also confirm that the club is placed under the embargo further not to pay players.”
