A Chinese mega-embashing near the Tower of London will be approved by the ministers within a few weeks.
The Planning Inspectorate, which decided on a large infrastructure project, had provided a green light scheme in a report sent to Angela Rayner just under two weeks ago, the Sunday Times reported.
It is expected that it is officially approved by the Deputy Prime Minister before September, a step that is likely to begin the judicial review process.
US security and government officials have urged the labor government to block development in the midst of espionage issues. “The United States is very concerned about giving China to access to sensitive communication from one of our closest allies,” a White House official told The Sunday Times.
The so-called “Super-Embasy” was blocked by the previous government but the plan was placed back on the table after the personal lobby of President XI.
The proposed site is located close to the Tower of London in Royal Mint Court, between the city of London and Canary Wharf.
The inter-parliamentary alliance in China (IPAC) has claimed the British Bank threat team has warned of the “risks related to” the site, which is also very close to three important data centers.
Kemi Badenoch, leader of the conservative party, said: “The government must block this request from China, a country said by the Prime Minister itself as a ‘enemy’ and what the Head of MI5 said was to carry out espionage on the ‘epic scale’ of the British,” Kemi Badenoch, leader of the conservative party, said in a comment reported by Sunday.
“The Embassy site is several times bigger than the Royal Albert Hall.”
A spokesman for the embassy said: “Anti-Chinese elements are always interested in slander and attack China.”
In a joint letter last week, a group of parliamentary members approved by China wrote to Foreign Minister David Lammy asked him to take the abolition of their sanctions from the table in every discussion about the embassy.
They said: “We hope you will take this opportunity to convince us that our sanctions will not be on the table when things like that are being considered.
“We all prefer to remain approved than exchange our national security.”
The government has been approached to comment.
