The NHS application can save millions of people because it will be a default communication method for patients who seek a reminder of the promise, screening invitations, and test results.

Millions of people will receive personal health information directly to their smartphone in the next three years in a step that is expected to save health services £ 200 million, said the Ministry of Health and Social Care.

This will also avoid the needs of at least 50 million NHS letters sent by post every year, with the Secretary of the Health equating changes from analog to digital to “online banking or ordering takeaway”.

Government investment £ 50 million will see a 270 million message sent through the NHS application this year, an increase of 70 million in the previous financial year.

Push notification will give a reminder of a promise to patients to try to reduce the risk of attendance, with around eight million gathering promises that are missed in the elective treatment that was missed in 2023/24.

More than 11 million people in the UK are currently entering the NHS application every month, while nearly 20 million choose to receive health care messages from the application.

Where the application message is not available, especially for elderly patients without a smartphone, communication will be sent via text message and then through the letter as the last choice and the telephone line will be released.

It is hoped that changes will give patients with better access to manage their health care journey and make decisions based on information about their care.

More tracking updates in the NHS application

NHS App Services, which was launched in December 2018, is now used in 87% of hospitals throughout Britain.

Last month, NHS England announced that millions of patients would be able to get the “Amazon Style” tracking update on their recipes through the application, to check whether their drugs were ready to be collected or sent for shipping.

Wes Streeting Health Secretary says: “People live a life that is increasingly busy and wants to access information about their health with one touch of buttons, rather than having to wait weeks -weeks for letters that often arrive late.

“This government brings our analog health services to the digital age, so that being a patient at NHS is as comfortable as online banking or ordering takeaway.

“NHS still spends hundreds of millions of pounds on stamps, printing and envelopes. By modernizing health services, we can free a large amount of funds to invest in the front lines.

“Through investment and reforms in our change plan, we will make the front door NHS application to health services and place power in the hands of the patient.”

Rachel Power, Chief Executive of the Patient Association, said: “The big increase in the NHS application marks a significant step in modernizing how patients receive information, from test results to screening invitations.

“This is a recommendation from our digital coalition and is aware of the changes requested by patients.

“We welcome this investment and the ambition behind it. The success for every digital innovation will be an implementation of digital inclusion plans and work directly with patients and the community.”
