The Federation of British Basketball Founded (BBF) can face the second round of legal action after the owner of Manchester basketball warns warns that they are still considering joining Super League Basketball (SLB) in suing government bodies.
The head of Manchester basketball was disappointed by BBF’s decision last month to effectively block their participation in the Champions League Basketball next season in the midst of a bitter dispute between the federation and the domestic league.
Manchester basketball still hopes to play in several forms of European competition in 2025-26 but the owner of Ben Pierson said AM City The legal action remains an option.
“We have a correspondence with them. I am comfortable saying I did involve Freshfields about this and we have carried out dialogue. Whether it produces formal legal actions from us is still in the process. We have not r have rule out it,” Pierson said.
The Magic Circle Freshfields law firm has represented SLB, which confirmed last week that they demanded BBF for their decision to withdraw the license to operate the top flight after only one year, increasing the civil war in the British game.
BBF told Manchester that they could not support them to play in the Basketball Champions League because they were no longer part of the official national competition – the attitude that the club believed was legally and morally wrong.
“I think this is a very striking violation of many different laws, not a few of them are trading restraints,” added Pierson, who founded last year’s club with the Sherwood Group.
“It is only a terrible violation of what BBF should have done. We can ask lawyers to debate the legality and license and ability to play in Europe and the rules of FIBA and all of that, but you really cannot debate the morality of BBF – the goal specified to grow basketball – turn on and do this.
“The same offensive of some of these things is the last three or four months in terms of how they treat this license situation, for me the last straw.”
SLB to continue even though BBF, say Manchester
Although stripped from their license, the SLB club insisted on the league will take place next season. “They will not be able to stop us from running our business and wearing what we expect to be a better product than last year,” Pierson said.
The most likely basketball Manchester route to European competition is considered through ENBL, where fellow Newcastle Eagles SLB clubs reached the final last season.
BBF earlier this year gave a 15 -year license to operate the Top British division to GBBL, a company led by former NBA Executive Marshall Glickman. SLB refuses to take part in the tender, consider it illegal.
In the prospect of reconciliation with the BBF, Piarson said: “I am surprised that it has been going on all this time.
“However, it is not clear to me what the resolution is, because it feels like BBF has stepped so far.”
BBF has been approached to comment.
