When Hollywood mined his own past for more nostalgic bait, in the early 2000s it had become mature for reinvention thanks to millennium who saw their childhood with rose glasses.
Last year’s musical remake from Mean Girls triggered a re -evaluation of Lindsay Lohan, a Disney star whose personal life made her tabloid feed. Now he has reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis for the sequel to Freaky Friday in 2003. 22 years from the original swap of the body swap, Freakier Friday found Tess (Curtis) in a better place with her daughter Anna (Lohan), now an adult single mother to Harper (Julia Butters). The problem arises when he plans to marry Eric (Manny Jacinto), the father of the Harper Lily Middle School (Sophia Hammons).
Difficult marriages become chaotic when mysterious magic who exchanged mothers and children a few decades ago exchanged two teenagers with adults, with groups competing to turn curses before the wedding bells combined.
There is a sequel that has something new to add, and then there is a sequel who is satisfied just by bringing the character back to see what is happening. This is strong. It is difficult to know what is the point of this film apart from a few surface jokes about social media and aging, but there are some innocent pleasures along the way.
Many of them come from the fact that Curtis and Lohan clearly enjoy working together, and have chemistry that gives this film several hearts. Lohan can sometimes look somewhat lost, but makes a solid scene couple with Curtis, who threw himself into laughter as a grandmother owned by an annoying child.
Jordan Weiss scripts have some back from the first film that will satisfy for worshipers, but finally Freakier Friday is a little more than the reason to get the band back together (literally in one scene, with the return of the pink slip fiction group).
What is lacking in the discovery redeemed in enthusiasm, with two instructions working hard to ensure original fans will not go home disappointed.
Freakier Friday is in theaters from August 8.
