The story of Heathrow caught fire

Every working morning I wake up and ready to receive important emails that come at 6.30 in the morning. The email was sent by the producer of Nick Ferrari breakfast program at LBC, and contains an initial plan for the story that I will discuss with Nick in the air exactly one hour later. This is a slick routine and I enjoyed 7 minutes of my breakfast broadcasting.

However, on the morning of March 21, my alarm clock failed and I woke up about ten minutes before I was going to air. After jumping to the shirt I checked my email to find out that the plan for business news slots that morning was only “we will focus on Heathrow, clearly.” The reason why it is far from clear to me, until I check the news.

This is my confession; In a rare professionalism (or maybe in the highest expression from that) I quickly enhance what we know about Heathrow’s fire and descending into air waves. I mentioned all this because it seems like I was not alone in building ignorance in the morning of March. Heathrow’s executive chief, Thomas Woldbye, only found out about the closure of the airport half an hour before I did.

We know this because of the internal review of the airport into their fire handling, which was published yesterday, confirmed that the CEO first learned the drama at 6.45 in the morning on March 21, after sleeping the night before the phone was silent.

This error is certainly forgiven, if it is not due to the fact that the media report then implies that Woldbye has realized the fire and that strategic decisions have been taken to be submitted to their Chief Operating Officer to get sleep and be the best the next morning.

The Sunday Times reported the version of this event, quoting ‘people in Heathrow’ – and while the airport never officially made a statement like that, the transportation secretary said that at that time it was “understanding” about events – and the narration was never corrected by Heathrow.

The fact that CEO Heathrow cannot be entertained as long as the large crisis is very regrettable, and lessons related to resilience are most important, but we are also worthy to know exactly how and why the version of the event is included in the public domain and, it seems, direction to the transportation secretary, which is now very far from the truth.
