Open source betting Zuckerberg collides with EU regulations

Meta has refused to sign the AI New European Commission Practice Code, increasing tension with Brussels only a few weeks before the death regulation kicks.

Voluntary Guidelines – designed to help the technology giant prepare AI laws that sweep the European Union – rejected directly by the Head of Global Affairs of Meta Joel Kaplan, who warned them to introduce “legal uncertainty” and “exceed the scope of AI law”.

“Europe is heading to the wrong path on AI,” Kaplan wrote on LinkedIn. “We share concerns raised by other businesses that this outreach will limit the development and dissemination of the AI Frontier model in Europe, and prevent European companies that want to build businesses above them.”

Silicon Valley vs Brussels

Commission Code – which includes guidelines on transparency, safety, and copyright – has been signed by Meta Rival Openai and Mistral, and Microsoft reportedly prepared to follow.

But the rejection of Meta reflects a deeper frustration in Silicon Valley, where concerns increase that EU regulations develop faster than that can be followed by many companies.

More than 110 companies including Airbus, ASML, and Siemens recently signed a letter to UE President Ursula Von Der Leyen who called for “stop hours” for two years about the enforcement of AI Law.

The European Commission said the code offered a “stepping stone” for compliance, especially for the developer of AI-Model Meta Llama Meta Llama.

But the critics believe that it adds to the complexity and introduces new risks, especially surrounding copyright obligations and Dataset disclosure.

Kaplan warned that it could “suffocate” innovation in Europe – especially for small companies without meta compliance resources.
